Write On- What you read matters…

‘If you only read the books that everyone else is reading, you can only think what everyone else is thinking.’

Haruki Murakam

I love this quote.  I’ve always read widely and without any sense of purpose. I love discovery. The thrill of a new topic, a different way of looking at things and reading provides this.  I can’t properly describe the thrill discovering new writers, even if they were long before my time or today’s writers.  I have a tendency to avoid the best sellers list. I like books I can get my teeth into. Books that I have to pause, put down, and sometimes just take a breath. Some books I love for the sheer ride, the thrill of entering another world for a short period of time, those books, some of them bestsellers, are the icing on the cake. But the books I love are the solid reads. I like a book that slows my mind down.  Haruki Murakam is one of those writers. His quote really expresses the capability of books to transform our minds and our worlds. We are what we read and that directly influences what we write.

About susan sheldon nolen

It’s rare to catch me without coffee, a form of camera, or my beloved wire fox terriers. I love the history, the art, and it’s a massive part of my life, as I either paint, write, or get interrupted by my dogs, reminding me of the real world. I hope you enjoy your time here. It’s such a privilege to have readers.

Very true, Susan! I like to read a mixture of things myself… variety is the spice of life after all! Here’s to different thoughts!!!

  2. I love your last line. May I quote it and link it to you?

  3. Morgan says:

wonderful quote…thank you so much for sharing! 🙂 Its so very true.

  4. I love to discover new (even if just to me) writers so I’m always looking for a good steady source. I have some biz type books I need to get through right now and that type of requirement makes me long to pick up old favorites. Which can be dangerously distracting because I know exactly how much fun it can be to traipse around w/certain beloved authors (Hunter Thompson) for a bit. It’s so easy to get sucked back down the same old rabbit hole if I don’t have something tempting lined up.

I’m always curious to know what people are reading! Bill Gates just shared his summer reading list on his blog and John Cusack made an excited recommendation on twitter recently so- thanks to social media- my booklist is currently stacked (though still constantly craving).

I'd love to hear your thoughts!
